Newspapers In The Classroom Add Pizzazz

Curriculum coordinators and social studies teacher nationally have been facing a dilemma for years; namely ‘How to get adolescent boys to read history.’  Historical Fishwrap’s themed 16-page reproduction newspapers maybe an entertaining and useful social studies aid for your classroom. Their reproduction newspapers are exact full-size copies of original front-pages from across the United States integrating both metropolitan and small town locations. Students read history on the day the ink dried verses ‘musty’ textbook copy. These historicl newspapers provided an added advantage to educators, since they are primary sources for both national and all state teaching standards.  Students can actual touch and manipulate the primary source material rather then reading a textbook resource ‘box’, other source book analysis or ‘boring’ computer lab experience.

“Imagine studying WWII and reading about it from newspaper articles written at that time. The story unfolds before your eyes, with language from that time period. Schools in Northeastern Wisconsin already use Historical Fishwrap papers in their classrooms. This is a great way to learn history as it happened, then compare and contrast the old articles with current ones.” SoUrban.net recently reported. Professor John Rathbun, from Illiniois Central College, states, ”Newspapers are written without knowing what will happen next and provide a picture of a day in time with far less interpretation done for the reader.  Evidence often points in many directions. With Historical Fishwrap newspapers the reader can see the complexity of real life. As someone who has often used newspapers in my history and social studies classroom, I am impressed by and enjoy Historical Fishwrap’s papers.  Based on the quality and uniqueness of what is already available I am excited about their potential for the future as they publish more and more material and develop new products.” To date Historical Fishwrap has produced 5 newspapers the America Goes to War and World War II Air War series. Five more papers will soon be released. Free lesson plans and school district discounts are available by contacting Ken Molzahn at molzahngb@sbcglobal.net or www.historicalfishwrap.com

Former First Lady Laura Bush says that it’s okay for President Obama to address schoolchildren via a back-to-school speech. “I think there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to schoolchildren and encourage schoolchildren,” but that parents had “the right” to not let their children hear his speech. Also, she didn’t think it is fair for Obama to be called a socialist by foes – just as her own husband was the brunt of criticism under his watch. “We’re polarizing a lot of people,” she says. “I think it’s just what happens.” She also comments that President Obama is “doing a good job,” and his wife Michelle is “doing great.” Finally, she says that former Vice President Dick Cheney “has every right to speak out, and I appreciate that he’s defending the Bush administration. I think that’s important. I think there’s a place for that.”
